Layers of the Cities

In this series, “Layers of the Cities”, I examine the layers created by every element that enters the photographic frame: buildings standing side by side or alone, each with its own distinct form, texture, color, and material; people and urban animals passing by at that moment; and the natural and geographical features of the area where the buildings are located. These elements, coming together in the same moment—though they may go unnoticed at different times of the day—form layers in my eyes, like different yet harmonious pieces of a puzzle, through photography.

The combination of harmonious and incompatible differences, which can be seen a lot in Istanbul, the city where I started photography, intuitively formed my view of photography over time. In the explorations I made through photography in each new city I visited, I documented the popular structures and sometimes the structures and cityscapes that caught my attention as I was passing by. The conscious and unconscious combination of the different factors I mentioned above formed the layers of these cities in my memory that I created through photography.
